DUX SUPPORTS GREEN HOUSE PROJECT

Dux Hot Water's award-winning SunPro® solar gas continuous hot water system has been selected for a Victorian Government-backed environmental housing project.

The SunPro® system is helping to meet the sustainability targets of the BuildSmart Show House being built by the Holmesglen Institute of TAFE's Sustainable Building Education Centre at Waverley in Victoria.

The innovative house is the result of a national design competition run by Holmesglen and won by architects Third Ecology from Geelong.

The 120 square metre home has been designed to achieve a five star energy rating, including zero net energy use for heating and cooling and producing 90 per cent of its hot water needs from solar energy.

"The architects recommended we approach Dux for the house's water heater because of the company's reputation as one of the leaders in solar hot water," said BuildSmart manager Bart Scheen.

Last year the SunPro® solar gas continuous system won the annual Environmentally Sustainable Design award at the national Designbuild exhibition in Melbourne.

"We want this project to show how much hot water systems like the SunPro® can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, so when the BuildSmart project approached us we were happy to participate," said Dux's Victorian State Manager, Ray Gair.

The SunPro is a hybrid system combining state-of-the-art solar collector technology boosted by a continuous-flow natural gas heater and connected to one of Dux Hot Water's tried and proven storage tanks.

Tests according to Australian standards show that the system can provide up to an 80 per cent saving on annual water heating costs.

"Dux Hot Water believes that in addition to the financial savings there are potentially substantial benefits to the community from encouraging the more environmentally sustainable supply of hot water," said Mr Gair.

The BuildSmart Show House has been designed with the aim of a net reduction in the creation of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide.

The BuildSmart house is being built by Holmesglen building apprentices. It will be completed in May and will be on public display as an educational resource for students, building practitioners and the wider community.
