 
New homes, alterations and additions in SA for all class 1a and b buildings with building approval after 1st July 2008 are required to install:

Solar and heat pump water heaters – the requirements are specified as the minimum number of Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) a system is eligible for.

Gas water heaters are required to achieve a minimum of a 5 star rating from 1st May 2009.

Conventional electric water heaters can NO LONGER be installed in new class 1 buildings.
